Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Professor Brenizer to retire this summer

Jack Brenizer, professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, is retiring on July 1.
Brenizer has a long history with the University. He completed his master’s degree in engineering science and his doctoral degree in nuclear engineering at Penn State.
After spending 18 years at the University of Virginia as assistant professor, associate professor, and director of the nuclear reactor facility, Brenizer came back to Penn State. In 1999, he joined the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering as a professor. He also served as the chair of the nuclear engineering program for 11 years. From 2007 to 2015 Brenizer held the J. “Lee” Everett Professorship in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering.
In his 17 years with the department, Brenizer has been a strong supporter of Penn State’s nuclear engineering program. His research focused on radiation detection, neutron radiography, and neutron activation analysis. He has published and presented numerous papers describing his research activities.
Brenizer’s teaching and research have been recognized throughout his career. In 2009, he was named a Fellow of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). He received the ASTM E7 Charles W. Briggs Award in 1997, the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society Distinguished Service Award in 2006, the American Society for Engineering Education Glenn Murphy Award in 2008, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing Mehl Honor Lecture Award in 2013, and an American Nuclear Society Presidential Citation in 2015. During his career, Brenizer has advised 11 doctoral students in addition to many master’s students and undergraduate researchers.
